19. Liturgical Vestments

Liturgical Vestments:  1. Kottina  2. Zunara  3. Urara  4. Zande  5. Paina or Gulta

SPECIAL VESTMENTS
People do dress differently when they go to church and when they go to work.  They put on special clothes during baptism, wedding and burial.  People usually select dresses suited to each occasion.

“Priests and other ministers in the Mar Toma Margam dress themselves in proper liturgical vestments during liturgical celebrations.”

1. Kottina: Kottina is the long tunic type garment reaching from the neck to the ankles, of any colour.
Kottina is the Syriac term used for the outer garment of lso’-Msiha, which was woven as one whole by Blessed Virgin Mary and is said to have grown big with him.  Anyhow, at his crucifixion, the soldiers cast lot for it without allowing it to be torn off (Jn 19,23-24).
The person who wears Kottina, puts on Iso’-Msiha and performs His priestly ministry in His place.

2. Zunara: Zunara is the Syriac word for the belt-like strip of cloth worn over the Kottina at the waist.  It is the symbol of “Chastity”.  Holy Qurbana and other rites of divine worship are acts which are to be performed with perfect holiness, keeping oneself away from all kinds of worldly thoughts and emotions.

3. Urara: Urara is the special humeral vestment worn by priests in the neck in such a way that its both ends extend beyond the knees in front.  The Subdeacons (Heuppadiakana) wear it around their neck in such a way that its ends fall to the back and front on the left shoulder.  The Deacons (Msamsana) wear it on the left shoulder without putting it around the neck.  In Latin tradition, they call it the Stole.
This sacred vestment is the symbol of ministerial priesthood in all liturgical traditions.

4. Zande: Zande is the Syriac word for gloves or handcuffs. They are worn to keep the handcuffs of the Kottina in order.

5. Paina: Paina is the outermost liturgical vestment that priests put on.  It is similar to the cope in Latin tradition.  In Syriac it is known as Gulta.
Paina or Gulta is the garment of justice.  It proclaims the fact that a priest is the fount or source of all kinds of virtues.
Historically, paina appears to be the outer garment of shepherds.  Thus it proclaims the pastoral duty of a priest as well.
The Paina, Zande, Urara and Zunara are made of the same stuff.  Mar Toma Margam prescribes no special colour for liturgical Vestments; the black colour is never used.

18. Holy Mysteries

GETTING TOGETHER
People often gather together.  They come together to celebrate the special occasions of their own life or others.  Do we not get together for celebrating birthdays, feasts, baptism, marriage and several other days of commemoration?

TO CELEBRATE THE MYSTERIES
Mar Toma Nazranees also get together for many things.  The most important occasion when they come together is that of the Holy Qurbana.  It is a time when they celebrate in signs and symbols the whole of their redemptive history, fulfilled in the Christ event.

“Holy Qurbana for a Mar Toma Nazranee is the inexplicable event, where he or she proclaims and bears witness to his or her consecrated existence according to the Mar Toma Margam.”

Celebration of Holy Qurbana is the decisive event of one’s growth into the personality and identity of Iso’-Msiha.

HOLY QURBANA AND HISTORY OF SALVATION
Holy Qurbana is the commemoration of the whole history of salvation, namely, the incarnation, its background of Old Testament history, private and public life of Iso’-Msiha, his passion, death, burial, resurrection, gift of the Holy Spirit, reconciliation of mankind with God and final union with Him.
Holy Qurbana is a unique celebration where the holocaust, the supreme sacrificial action of Old Testament, the Last Supper together with the death of Iso’ on Calvary, the Pentecost, the whole sacrificial life of the Church and the life in heaven are brought together
Iso’-Msiha himself is the offerer and the victim of the Holy Qurbana; and everything is perfected through his representatives, the priests.

SEVEN PARTS
The Holy Qurbana in Mar Toma Margam may be divided to seven sections:

1. Enarxis, 2. Liturgy of the Word, 3. Rite of Preparation, 4 Quddasa (Anaphora), 5.  Rite of Reconciliation, 6.  Rite of Communion,  and  7.  Concluding Rites.

The priests and other ministers wear proper and prescribed liturgical vestments during the Holy Qurbana.  Usually it is celebrated in the church with proper structural settings.  Specific articles are also used while offering the Holy Qurbana.

17. Weeks of Dedication of the Church (Qudas - Edta)

“This last Season of the liturgical year begins with the following prayer: “O Lord, the Church redeemed by your Cross and the sheep purchased by your precious Blood, offer you the High Priest garlands of praise; for, you raised her by humbling yourself.  As a glorious Bride, she rejoices and feels happy in you who are her ever-praised Groom.  By the power of truth you raise the fortress of her salvation and give priests that her children become messengers of peace””

HEAVENLY BRIDAL CHAMBER
The Dedication of the Church is a Season when Iso’, the Bridegroom leads his Bride, the Church
into the heavenly bridal chamber and fills her with great enjoyment.  At the end of the salvation history, when everything is fully transformed into Iso’-Msiha, he submits himself to the Father so “that God may be everything to every one” (1 Cor 15, 28).  This is in Fact, the communion of the redeemed with the heavenly Father.  What is emphasized in this liturgical Season is exactly the same.

HOUSE OF GOD
The Church is the House of God and it is a heavenly institution; God the Father has given her form; God the Son has fixed her foundation; and God the Holy Spirit sanctifies her with grace.

STANDING TABERNACLE
In the Book of Exodus (ch. 26) we read of a temporary tabernacle of ten veils of fine twined linen.  It was only a pre-figuration; the Church is the standing tabernacle of God, substituting it.  She stands in the world as a sign of the heavenly kingdom.  She proclaims her reality through the celebration of Mysteries, especially, the Holy Qurbana,

HEIRS OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF ISO’-MSIHA
Church is the community which Iso’-Msiha redeemed from sin by his own Body and Blood.  Hence the believers ought to be continuously nourished by his Body and Blood in the celebration of the “Body broken for the forgiveness of sins” and the “Blood shed for the forgiveness of sins” (Order of Raza).

SHIP ON SAIL
Church is a ship sailing straight to eternal life.  Anyone who likes to enter that must receive Baptism and confess the Father; the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Inside the ship, there is always serenity and calmness even when the sea is violent and turbulent.
Thus the Season of Dedication of the Church commemorates becomingly the identity and individuality of the Church, her inalienable relation with the Holy Trinity, the dignity of Priesthood which sustains and preserves her through the vicissitudes of history, and so on.

BIBLICAL READINGS
The Sunday readings of this Season lead us through all the above mentioned holy Mysteries.  What is most prominent everywhere is the image of the Church.

FIRST SUNDAY

1.  Ex 40, 17-6

Presence of the Lord in the temporary tabernacle.

2.  Is 6, 1-13

Isaiah’s vision of heaven, the Holy Temple.  The burning coal that touched the lips of the prophet is the image of the Risen Body of Iso’ in the Qurbana.

3.  1 Cor 12, 28-13, 13

The Church founded on love.

4.  Mt 16,13-19

Faith in Iso’-Msiha as the foundation of the Church

SECOND SUNDAY

1.  Ex 39,32-40,16

The Bread of the Holy Presence in the temporary tabernacle.  The priesthood given to Aaron and his children that they may minister to the Lord there.
2.  1 King 8,10-29

The splendour of the Lord filled the temple built by Solomon.  There, before the altar, Solomon offered his prayers.

3.  Heb 8,1-9

Iso’-Msiha is such a high priest, one who, is seated at the right hand in the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the Sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord.
4.  Mt 12, 1-21

Iso’-Msiha is greater than the Temple; the Lord of Sabbath; the chosen Servant of God.

THIRD SUNDAY

New Jerusalem; the Lord will raise his children; and they will gain fame.

3.  Heb 9,5-15

Sacrifices of Old and the New Sacrifice; Iso’-Msiha, the High Priest is the mediator of the New covenant.

4.  Jn 2,13-22

Iso’-Msiha cleanses Temple; his Body is new Temple.

FOURTH SUNDAY

1.  1 King 6,1-19

Solomon builds the house of God and the Lord confirms his promise to him.

2.  Ezek 43,1-7; 44,1-5

Ezekiel saw the glory of God coming from the east and filling the Temple

3.  Heb 9,15-28

Iso’-Msiha has entered heaven itself to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

4.  Mt 22,41-23,22

Iso’ -Msiha, the Son of David is our only leader.

“The liturgical prayers and hymns of this Season also manifest deep insights into the reality of the Church.  The foundation of the church is firmly fixed on the rock that is Peter; neither wind nor storm can topple it down; she remains in the world as the continuation of Iso’-Msiha, and as the sign of the heavenly Kingdom; she lives and serves through the priesthood, which is the continuation of Iso’s priesthood.”

16. WEEKS OF ELIYAH-SLIBA AND MOSES (Eliyah-silba and Muse)

As indicated above, Eliyah-Sliba and Moses are two Seasons that take their origin from one feast, namely, the feast of Transfiguration.  Hence we discuss them together under one title.

EXALTATION OF THE CROSS
The celebration of the Exaltation of the Cross on September 14th is the fulcrum on which the whole liturgical Season and partially the whole liturgical year turn.  It is, in fact, the celebration of the glorious Cross as well as the invention of the Holy Cross by empress Helena, mother of emperor Constantine in the fourth century.
According to the liturgical laws, there must be at least one Sunday for the Season of Eliyah-Sliba before September 14th and the Sunday that follows it must be celebrated as the fourth Sunday of Eliyah-Sliba.  The Sundays before September 14th ought to be called the first, second, third....  Sunday of Eliyah; but the Sundays after that may be named either the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh Sunday of Eliyah or the first, second, third, fourth Sunday of Sliba.

SECOND COMING
The Church that attains her perfection through the working of the Holy Spirit, reaches the goal with the Second Coming of Iso’-Msiha.  Hence the Second Coming and Final Judgement are specially emphasized during these liturgical Seasons.
There is a belief in the Church, right from the beginning, that Eliyah would appear before the Second Coming of Iso’, and he would make dispute with the son of perdition and make public his errors, and after that the glorious Cross would appear.  This belief too has become a basis for the name Eliyah-Sliba for this liturgical Season.

HOLY CROSS - THE RISEN LORD
The Holy Cross is the Symbol or Icon or Sacrament of the Risen or Transfigured Iso’-Msiha for Mar Toma Nazranees.  As it is already indicated, the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor could be proposed as the substance and reality of Christian living.  Hence the Eastern Churches give it great importance in the divine worship.

ANTICIPATION OF HEAVENLY LIFE
The special feature of these liturgical Seasons is to make possible an anticipation of heavenly life here on earth itself.  What the Apostles experienced on Mount Tabor was the same.  In that ecstatic experience the chief of the Apostles exclaimed:
“Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eliyah” (Mt 17, 4).
Today the devotees experience such an anticipated heavenly bliss only in the Church - in the liturgical celebrations of the church, especially, in the Holy Qurbana.  Each and every faithful gets true and authentic experience of the risen Lord there and thus through the grace of the Holy Spirit, he/she is transfigured into his personality.

ESCHATOLOGICAL REALITIES
The prayers and rites, special to these Seasons, are helpful to get convinced of the last realities such as the end of this world, the end of earthly life, the judgement, heaven or hell, etc.  That will definitely make the believers aware of the bitter fruits of sin and will form a repentant heart in them.  Thus it enables them to raise sentiments of authentic praise and thanksgiving to the saving God from the depth of their hearts.

COMMENTARY OF BRIK - ISHO
Brik - Isho, one of the famous commentators of East Syriac Liturgical Year, gives us a good description of the Weeks of Moses:
“After the Weeks of Eliyah, there may be one or two or three Sundays before the  beginning of the Weeks of Dedication of the Church.  Its reason is as follows: No one who lives in this world knows the time of our Redeemer’s arrival.  The Lord himself said: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Mt 24, 36).

VICTORY OF THE HOLY CROSS
Another speciality of these Seasons is to proclaim the strength and victory of the Holy Cross.  The “Sign of the Son of’ Man” (Mt 24, 30) that would appear in heaven at the end of the world, as mentioned in the Gospel, would be the Holy Cross itself.  Tradition of the Church also holds testimony to this fact.  It was (and still is) as an anticipated manifestation of the second coming of the Lord that the apparition of the Cross to emperor Constantine, invention of the Holy Cross, etc. were celebrated in the Church.
In early Church, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross was held as equal to Easter celebration.  It could be understood only from its veneration as a Sacrament of the Risen Lord; and in fact, the empty Cross signified so in the early Church.

VALUE OF SUFFERING
Flowery or glorious Cross is also a symbol which expresses the real value of Christian Suffering.  Those who suffer with Iso’-Msiha will also be raised with him in order to share his glorious life.

EIGHT - DAY FAST
The Feast of the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8th is also an important Feast for Mar Toma Nazranees.  Mar Toma Margam prescribes an Eight-Day Fast in preparation to this feast.  This appears to be a practice that originated in Kerala itself.  It is an observance started in connection with the Moslem invasion of Crangannore in the 9th century, to safeguard the chastity of Nazranee Virgins. During that invasion, they took refuge in the churches where they spent their time in prayer and penance.  Mostly the womenfolk keep this observance.  After the morning Holy Qurbana, they remain in the church in prayer and meditation until the Evening Liturgy of the Hours (Ramsa) is absolved.
We hear of an observance for three days in Persia, known as “Virgins’ Fast”.  It is true that the Eight-Day Fast has some similarity to that.  But historians affirm that the Eight-Day Fast is an independent observance developed among the Mar Toma Nazranees in connection with an historical event.

15. WEEKS OF SUMMER (Qaita)

While we proclaim the sprouting and infancy of the Church in the Season of Apostles, along the weeks of Summer we commemorate her maturity and fruitfulness.  The Syriac term Qaita means “summer.” It is during Summer that the grains and fruits ripen and mature.  Thus the name indicates that it is a season of plentiful harvest for the Church.

“The fruits of the Church are that of Holiness and Martyrdom.  The Church, having grown, developed and spread to different parts of the world, shines forth as the image of the heavenly Kingdom giving birth to very many saints and martyrs.  This reality of the Church is proclaimed during the Season of Summer.”

THE TWELVE APOSTLES
This Season begins, celebrating the feast of the twelve Apostles.  There are also documents that describe the first Sunday of Summer as the last Sunday of Apostles.  Since there is continuity between these two Seasons, it is quite meaningful that they meet in one feast.

“The Apostles are the foundation of the Church, while Iso’ -Msiha himself is the corner stone.  It is impossible for the Church to dream about a holiness and spiritual maturity apart from the Apostles.”

NUSARDEIL
In all official liturgical books, the first Sunday of Summer is also marked Nusardeil.  It is a Persian word and it means, “God-given New Year Day.”
If it is so, the first Sunday of Summer could be very well considered as an important feast day which unites together God, namely, Iso’-Msiha, the “God with us”, his twelve Apostles and the Church built upon them.  Since a few years, they do not mark this on the Syro-Malabar Liturgical Calendar.

FEAST OF THE SAINTS
It is quite natural that Saints and Martyrs are specially honoured in this particular Season.  As in the Season of Denha, in the Summer too, Fridays are set apart for such celebrations.
Among these feasts, one that is to be specially mentioned is the Feast of Mar Mari, one of the Apostles of the East.  This Feast is celebrated on the Second Friday.  According to the liturgical books, he is a disciple of Mar Addai.
The other Saints celebrated are, Mar Jacob of Nisibis (first Friday), Marta Simoni and her Seven Children (fifth Friday), Mar Simon Bar Sabbai and Friends (sixth Friday) and Sahda Mar Quardag (seventh Friday).

BLESSED ALPHONSA
Bl.  Alphonsa was crowned with eternal glory on July 28, 1946.  Hence July 28 is a great Feast-Day for the Mar Toma Nazranees.

TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD
The Feast of Transfiguration (August 6), which for Eastern Churches, is one of the most important celebrations in the Liturgical Year, comes usually during this Season.  The biblical episode of Transfiguration (Mt 17, 1-9; Mk 9, 1-9; Lk 9, 28-36) is self-expressive.  In its liturgical celebration, we proclaim the human divinization that happens when the salvific action perfected in Iso’-Msiha works in men by the power of the Holy Spirit.  This celebration, therefore, is considered as one of the six principal moments of the Salvation History.
When Iso’-Msiha was transfigured on Mount Tabor, Eliyah and Moses, as the representatives of the Old Testament, appeared there; the representatives of the New Testament, the three Apostles were also there. The glorious Cross is the icon or sacrament of risen Lord and all Eastern Churches understand this symbolism perfectly well.  Thus the two Seasons, which follow the Season of Summer, namely, of Eliyah-Sliba and Muse are emphasized in celebrating this biblical episode of Transfiguration.

“What is proclaimed in this “feast celebration” is the eschatological dimension of the History of Salvation.  Such pauses and celebrations inspire and encourage men who live always according to worldly ways and standards.  Mar Toma Nazranees also must celebrate this Feast most solemnly.”

ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY
Another important feast that comes in this Season is that of the Assumption of our Lady (August 15).  The Fifteen-Day-Fast in preparation for this Feast itself indicates the importance given to it in the Mar Toma Margam.  This official fasting proves that Mar Toma Nazranees always revere and venerate the Mother of Iso’-Msiha most becomingly in their liturgical year. This feast celebration is also an emphasis and guarantee of the eschatological dimension of our Christian existence.
“August 15th is also the National Independence Day for Mar Toma Nazranees.  It is, indeed, a blessing and highly providential that these two symbols of spiritual and physical liberation were united in celebration on this particular day.”
