1. MAR TOMA MARGAM

PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT
People are different; they act and behave differently.  Their nature is also different.  While some are interested in reading, others take delight in playing and not a few find satisfaction in manifold works.
What a lot of difference there is even in the very figure and character of men!  Fair, dark, black: the different coloured people.  Tall and short, handsome and ugly - in everything diversity and variety.  Thus, contrast is seen also in the figure and nature of people.

FOOD AND DRESS DIFFER
There exists a variety of foodstuffs.  People have different tastes and likes and they have different styles of cooking and eating.  The delicacies of some are taboos for others.
There exists also a variety of dress.  Each one has his own likes and dislikes in dressing.  According to climate, condition or country we change our dress too.

DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
There is diversity in the spoken language too: Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Marati, Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, Bengali etc.  There are so many linguistic groups within India itself and all these are equally Indians.

DIVERSE PRAYER STYLES
There are differences in prayer style too.  While some pray standing, some others do it prostrating.  There are people who kneel down for their prayer and yet others who take the Padmasana pose.

A WORLD OF DIVERSITY
Lot of diversity is seen in the world.  How difficult it is to find a person exactly like another!  Does any animal or bird look exactly like the other?  One plant or flower is not like another plant or flower.  God is the cause of all these differences.  It is he who has created each one distinct from others.
"Our God is one who rejoices in the diversity of things.  That is his will too.  He dislikes false unity or uniformity, which is evil.  We should never long for it.  Evil estranges us from God."
DIVERSITY IN THE CHURCH
There is only one Catholic Church and Jesus Christ (Iso’-Msiha) is her founder.  It is the Holy Spirit (Ruha da-Qudsa) that guides this Church.  There too are plenty of diversities.  There is difference between the Latin Church and the Syro-Malabar Church; Syro-Malankara Church is different from both of these.  Still, all of them, the Latins, the Syro-Malabarians and the Syro-Malankara faithful, are equally Catholics. There are 22 such distinct or “individual” or sui juris Churches in the Catholic communion.  The one Catholic Church exists in and through each one of them.  None of them is more or less Catholic.  Let us put it like this.
TWENTY TWO = ONE
Each one of these particular Churches has her own special features.  Since the life of the Church is most perfectly manifested in the Divine Worship (Liturgy), it is there that those unique features become clearer.
"As God likes diversity, he also likes the special features of each   individual Church."

[Bishops from Eastern Churches hearing Pope Benedict XVI's address on the 20th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, October 9, 2010]
MAR TOMA NAZRANEES
Mar Toma Nazaranees are the St. Thomas Christians of India.  They have their own special Christian life-style and liturgical celebrations.
St. Thomas (Mar Toma) was one of the twelve apostles (Slihe) of Jesus Christ.  Jesus is called Nazarene as the major portion of his earthly life was spent at Nazareth, a town in the northern region of Palestine.  Thus, Mar Toma Nazaranees are those who follow Jesus the Nazarene according to the unique faith-experience of Mar Toma (St. Thomas).

MAR TOMA MARGAM
Mar Toma Margam is the unique Christian life-style of the Mar Toma Nazranees.  Margam is a Sanskrit word (now used in several other Indian languages too) that signifies the “way of life” or “life-style”, especially of a religious nature.  Thus Mar Toma Margam is the particular Christian life-style, introduced in India by Mar Toma, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.  Centuries back, in the beginning of Christian era itself, this special Christian life-style germinated in our own motherland India through St. Thomas (Mar Toma) who lived with, touched and experienced the Son of God, Jesus.
Mar Toma Margam is hope incarnate; the Bible is its heart and the Mar Toma Sliba (St. Thomas Cross), its expression.
"Mar Toma Nazranees (St. Thomas Christians) are those who live according to the Mar Toma Margam.  They are God-fearing and God-loving Catholics.  Their Qurbana and other liturgical celebrations have their own special features and distinctive characteristics.  Wherever they are, the Mar Toma Nazranees are bound to live according to this particular life-style."
HOLY QURBANA
The Centre of Mar Toma Margam is the Holy Qurbana.  The most solemn form of Qurbana is called Raza.  The other two are solemn and simple forms of Qurbana.
Holy Qurbana is the re-enactment through signs and symbols, of the redemptive work perfected and completed in Jesus Christ.
On all important occasions when the Mar Toma Nazranees get together, the Qurbana is celebrated.
“When you are gathered together in my name, do this that I have done, in remembrance of me” (Order of the Raza).

MOTHER TONGUE OF JESUS AS OUR LITURGICAL LANGUAGE
Today we celebrate the Holy Qurbana in our own mother tongue.  But from the very beginning, namely, the time of St. Thomas the Apostle, up to July 3, 1962, we used to celebrate Qurbana in Syriac language.  Syriac, however, is same as the Aramaic language, the mother tongue of Jesus.  Both the Bible and the early Church tradition owe a lot to this language and its semitic cultural background.
To become scholars in Syriac language and culture, was always considered something very prestigious by Mar Toma Nazranees.  Syriac language was the medium of expression for Mar Toma Margam.
